Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday: This year, Valentine’s Day happens to be the same day as Ash Wednesday. We will be having an Ash Wednesday Liturgy in the gym that morning.
Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent and Ash Wednesday is a universal day of fasting. All Catholics over the age of 16 are expected to fast on this day. Younger students are encouraged to eat more modestly and to abstain from treats. Many students and families do practice various forms of abstinence from sweets, junk food, etc., during this Lenten time.
As a result, we will be celebrating Valentine’s day on Tuesday, February 13 to respect the solemnity of Ash Wednesday. Individual teachers will communicate with students and families regarding how they may be celebrating that day.
Tuesday, February 13 is also Shrove Tuesday a.k.a. Pancake Tuesday. Shrove Tuesday has traditional roots in our faith, where in England and many other countries, the festival is widely associated with the eating of rich foods made with eggs, sugar and butter, just like pancakes. All students will receive a pancake breakfast on Tuesday, February 13. Students are encouraged to bring their normal snacks and lunches on this day. St. Margaret is an Eco-School. Please bring a plate and utensils for this special treat! A special thank you also goes out to our School Council and our many parent volunteers for helping us with this event!
The Pilgrimage Cross
Earlier this school year, the Waterloo Catholic District School Board transitioned into our Pastoral Theme: “People of Faith” and a Pilgrimage Cross was created to honour this. This cross was blessed by Bishop Crosby and will be passed from school to school within the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. The cross will also be passed to all of the Parishes that are paired with each of our schools.
On Monday, January 29, St. Margaret welcomed the cross from the students of St. Teresa of Calcutta. All of the students lined up outside to watch as the cross was passed on to the students of St. Margaret. During this week, the cross will remain in our front foyer and classes will come and visit it and do many reflective activities on their own personal faith journeys.
